Predicting how rivet joining conditions affect fatigue life

We are predicting the fatigue life of aluminum alloy structures as it changes with the conditions used to join them with rivets.

Problem

Aircraft structures are made by joining aluminum alloy sheets with countless rivets. The problem is to predict how the assembly conditions of these joints affect the fatigue life of the structure. The target is joints between 2XXX series aluminum alloys and rivets.

Confirming even one fatigue life value takes a long cyclic loading test. Small differences in assembly conditions and tolerances can change the life, so testing every condition costs a lot of time and money.

TendiLab Solution

With assembly conditions as inputs and fatigue life as the property, this is the same kind of problem as the lightweight composites case. The same property prediction engine predicts how life changes with the conditions and analyzes which conditions drive it.

Target KPIs

  • Predict fatigue life for given assembly conditions before testing.
  • Find the assembly conditions that drive fatigue life.
